Dimensional Weight and How to Reduce It

Dimensional weight equals length times width times height divided by a divisor. Carriers compare actual and dimensional weight and bill the greater one. Light bulky shipments often get caught by DIM weight, so shrinking the box and reducing void fill can help more than negotiating rates.

When it applies

Common in parcel and air; ocean and full truckload use different volume/weight rules.

The divisor is carrier-specific, often 139/166/5000/6000 depending on units.

Reducing DIM weight

Use the smallest box that fits instead of a larger box plus filler.

Compress packaging for foldable or knock-down products.

Compare divisors and billing rules across carriers.

FAQ

Actual or dimensional weight?

The greater one is billed; light bulky shipments usually use DIM weight.

Is the divisor fixed?

No; it varies by carrier, service and country, so check before shipping.
