LTL vs FTL Freight
LTL shares a trailer among shippers and prices by weight, class and lane; FTL gives you the whole truck. Use LTL for small shipments and FTL when volume approaches a truckload or when time and damage risk matter.
When LTL fits
One to six pallets, moderate weight, and a two-to-five-day transit with multiple handling points are good fits.
LTL prices on freight class; low density and high class cost more.
When FTL fits
Use FTL near 12 to 24 pallets, for direct service, or for fragile/high-value freight.
FTL is priced per truck and lane; it is not always more expensive than a large LTL shipment, so compare total cost.
FAQ
Six pallets: LTL or FTL?
Usually LTL; compare FTL if time-sensitive or high value.
Why does LTL use class?
Class reflects density, handling difficulty and risk; higher class means higher rates.
